act 02 · discovery

The drawing is the argument

Most projects start by drawing screens. We start by drawing the system — what the data is, who touches it, and which decisions are expensive to reverse.

act 03 · interface

Color arrives last

Structure comes first. Every token here exists because a component needed it, not because a palette had gaps to fill. Six colors, four of them states.

act 04 · services

Both halves, one contract

Six Java services under the surface. The schema was agreed on day 11, so the front end never waited on the back end, and neither side lost a week to merges.

act 05 · verification

A plane, not a phase

Contract tests against the schema, focus order in the components, partition lag in the data. Eighteen assertions run here; two fail, and both get patched.

act 06 · ship

Ninety-four days

One team, no handoff between design and engineering, because there was no boundary to hand across.

What the drawing shows, act by act:

  1. Act one, hero: the five layers sit apart as a wireframe drawing.
  2. Act two, UX: the camera eases toward the top plane as the drawing gains clay fills.
  3. Act three, UI: color arrives and the interface layer resolves into real type.
  4. Act four, Java: the camera passes under the stack, the ground inverts to steel, and request sparks travel through all five layers.
  5. Act five, QA: a scan plane sweeps through every layer, asserting as it goes. Eighteen assertions run, two fail and are patched:
    • composition — no layout shift on load: pass.
    • composition — first paint under 1.5s: pass.
    • components — empty state renders: pass.
    • components — contrast ratio 4.9:1: pass.
    • components — 60-char name does not clip: failed, patched to long names truncate with tooltip.
    • components — focus order matches DOM: pass.
    • api — version header present: pass.
    • api — error envelope consistent: pass.
    • api — nullable fields declared: pass.
    • api — all 8 endpoints match schema: pass.
    • services — no unbounded queue: pass.
    • services — span sampling at 1.0: pass.
    • services — circuit breaker closed: pass.
    • services — thread pool headroom 34%: pass.
    • data — no orphaned offsets: pass.
    • data — replay window within retention: failed, patched to replay window extended to 7d.
    • data — consumer group balanced: pass.
    • data — partition lag under 200ms: pass.
  6. Act six, ship: the layers collapse into one flat console and it goes live.
  • Layer one, data: telemetry records landing on five partitions behind a write cursor.
  • Layer two, services: six Java services, their thread pools and traced spans.
  • Layer three, API contract: eight endpoints and the data shapes they return.
  • Layer four, components: the interface primitives — controls, table cells, plot frames.
  • Layer five, composition: the finished operations console the five layers add up to.

MEASURED, NOT CLAIMED

This page ships against a budget.

Every client build we touch runs against performance and accessibility budgets in CI. This page is held to the same ones. Last measured October 14, 2026 with Lighthouse 12 (mobile, simulated slow 4G, median of 3 runs).
